NRW invests €200 million in sport clubs and sports infrastructure
North Rhine-Westphalia is launching a major funding programme for sport, part of the “NRW Sports Billion” initiative. A total of €600 million will be invested in sports infrastructure across the state, including:
- €200 million for sport clubs
- €200 million for swimming pools
- €200 million for municipal sports facilities
The programme focuses on modernisation, renovation, and new construction of sport club facilities and aims to reduce the backlog of ageing sports infrastructure.
State Secretary for Sport and Volunteering Andrea Milz said the funding strengthens grassroots sport, health, and community engagement, continuing earlier programmes like Moderne Sportstätte 2022.
LSB NRW President Stefan Klett highlighted that the scheme supports sport clubs and helps improve local facilities while strengthening the region’s bid for future Olympic and Paralympic Games.
NRW.BANK will support the implementation to ensure funds are distributed efficiently to sport clubs and local projects.
Key dates:
- June 2026: start of application process for sport clubs
- September 2026: start of full application phase
The programme is part of Germany’s largest-ever investment in sport infrastructure, aiming to improve conditions for sport clubs, grassroots sport, and community sports facilities across NRW.
